Brad Marchand Appointed as Boston Bruins’ Hilarious New Captain: Prepare for Some Entertaining Reactions

Brad Marchand has been named the new captain of the Boston Bruins, sparking a mix of praise and banter from hockey fans online. Despite being one of the most hated players in the NHL, Marchand’s new role as captain has generated a lot of attention.

The 35-year-old from Hammonds Plains, N.S., was drafted by the Bruins in 2006 and will now become the 27th captain in team history when the NHL season begins in October.

Boston Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs expressed his pride in Marchand, stating, “Brad has been a Bruin for over 15 years and had the opportunity to learn from great leaders in Zdeno Chara and Patrice Bergeron. He is ready for this opportunity and our whole team will learn from his competitive nature and tenacity.”

Hockey fans on X, formerly known as Twitter, had plenty to say about Marchand’s new role as captain.

One user wrote, “This is sure to make the rest of the NHL thrilled.” Marchand is known for his hard-hitting playing style, which resulted in a nine-game suspension during the 2021-2022 season. He is also infamous for licking a player during the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs.

Another user humorously commented, “I haven’t been the same since Brad Marchand became the captain of the Boston Bruins (twenty minutes ago).” While some fans focused on Marchand’s controversial reputation, others reflected on his journey to becoming captain of a two-time Stanley Cup-winning team.

“From 4th liner to playoff hero and Stanley Cup Champ, to Captain. Legend,” said one user, acknowledging Marchand’s contributions to the Bruins’ 2011 league win.

Jacobs believes that Marchand will continue to represent the Bruins with “heart and grit.” Despite his aggressive playing style, Marchand has an impressive resume, ranking eighth in games played, sixth in goals, and ninth in assists in the team’s franchise history. He’s also proven himself in clutch moments, ranking fourth in game-winning goals for Boston.

Marchand is also recognized for his contributions off the ice as the club’s ambassador for Hockey is for Everyone, a league-wide initiative promoting positive social change and inclusivity through hockey.

The Boston Bruins’ season begins on Oct. 11 against the Chicago Blackhawks at TD Garden.
