According to CCC Intelligent Solutions, the automotive technician workforce is projected to decline by 4 percent from 2020 to the end of the decade.
In 2020, the demand for new technicians exceeded 35,000, but only 4,500 graduates from postsecondary collision programs were available, as stated in CCC’s 2023 Crash Course report.
The shortage of technicians is a significant concern for dealership profitability and customer satisfaction can be affected if vehicle repairs are not completed promptly, as mentioned in the report.
Volvo Cars aims to address the shortage by attracting more women to the predominantly male industry. Currently, women make up less than 5 percent of the automotive technician workforce, according to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics.
“We are dedicated to hiring and empowering women in various roles, including technicians, to achieve a 30 percent female workforce by 2030,” Moynihan, a representative of Volvo’s U.S. and Canada technician ranks, stated.
Part of creating a female-friendly environment in service technician jobs involves redesigning the uniform to ensure comfort for women while they work.
“Volvo is actively taking steps in recruitment and training,” noted Moynihan. “Even the small details matter, such as a uniform designed specifically for the job and the person wearing it.”
