Pilot on Boeing 757 dies of heart attack mid-flight with 239 passengers on board

A pilot onboard a plane flying from Bangkok to Novosibirsk in western Siberia tragically passed away from a heart attack, according to transportation prosecutors.

Sergei Golev, aged 44, suffered the heart attack while in the cockpit and tragically died despite resuscitation attempts.

Even a cardiologist among the passengers on the flight was unable to revive Golev.

Fortunately, the UTair Boeing 757, carrying 239 passengers, landed safely in Novosibirsk despite the pilot’s death.

The captain attempted an emergency landing in the Chinese city of Chengdu but had to abort it due to Golev’s passing before touchdown.

Senior investigator Anastasia Utochkina told Life News: ‘The co-pilot died at 12.25am, Novosibirsk Time (5.25pm GMT), three hours after takeoff.

‘The captain decided to descend, and the crew requested assistance from a female physician onboard the flight.

‘However, her attempts to revive the man, who was lying on the cockpit floor, were unsuccessful.’

Officials at the airport emphasize that the co-pilot was traveling as a passenger and never had control of the aircraft.

Irina Levit, a press officer at Novosibirsk airport, stated: ‘The deceased pilot was traveling as an ordinary passenger.

‘The aircraft belongs to UTair airline, where Sergey Golev was employed. There was no threat to passengers.’

Golev, a reserve pilot, served as a crew member responsible for replacing ill crew members.

The Investigation Department of Russia’s transport authority has launched an inquiry to determine the cause of the incident.
