Blue Jays’ Game 1 Starter Revealed: Gausman Takes the Mound!

MINNEAPOLIS – Clinching a playoff spot before the regular-season finale has its rewards. For the Blue Jays, it means ace Kevin Gausman doesn’t have to pitch on short rest in the wild-card series.

The Blue Jays officially announced that Gausman will start Game 1 against the Minnesota Twins.

“It was a straightforward decision,” said Toronto manager John Schneider. “Based on his performance and our desire for someone to set the tone, we want Kev out there against anyone.”

Gausman had a 12-9 record this season with a 3.16 earned-run average and led the American League with 237 strikeouts.

In Tuesday’s opener at Target Field, the Twins will counter with Pablo Lopez (11-8, 3.66).

Gausman primarily relies on his mid-90s fastball and a dominant splitter that frequently baffles batters. He also incorporates a slider into his arsenal.

Reflecting on the final days of the season, Gausman described it as “pretty weird.” He had to be mentally prepared to potentially pitch against Tampa Bay on Sunday.
