Remembering Russ Francis, Ex-New England Patriots Tight End, Who Has Sadly Passed Away

Meet Francis, a remarkable player who graced the NFL for 13 unforgettable seasons. He etched his name in the annals of football history as a member of both the New England Patriots (1975-80, 1987-88) and the iconic San Francisco 49ers (1982-87). Drafted by the Patriots in 1975, Francis brought his talent from Oregon to the professional stage.

During his time on the field, Francis proved himself to be a force to be reckoned with. He earned the title of All-Pro twice, in 1976 and 1978, and received the honor of being chosen for the Pro Bowl in 1977, 1978, and 1979. It comes as no surprise that he secured his spot in the Patriots all-decade team of the 1970s and the Patriots 35th Anniversary Team.

Though his career may have ended, Francis left an indelible mark on the record books. With 393 receptions, 5,262 yards, and 40 touchdowns, he solidified his legacy among tight ends. At the time of his retirement in 1988, his statistics ranked among the best at his position. His 5,262 receiving yards placed him at 11th, his 393 receptions at 12th, and his 40 touchdown receptions at a tie for 13th. Within the Patriots organization, Francis held lofty records, ranking sixth in receptions (207), fifth in receiving yards (3,157), and fourth in touchdown receptions (28). Even today, his 28 touchdown receptions stand at 11th in franchise history.

In a surprising turn of events, Francis was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 1982. This trade resulted in the selection of Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Andre Tippett for the Patriots. Francis’ time with the 49ers was monumental, culminating in a Super Bowl victory over the Miami Dolphins in 1984. However, destiny called him back to New England in 1987. It was there that he ultimately decided to retire, ending his illustrious career as a member of the Patriots after the 1988 season.
