Blinken Holds Meeting with Chinese Leader Xi Jinping in Beijing

Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping and top Chinese officials were described as “very candid, very in-depth” and “constructive”. The possibility of cooperation on important global challenges such as the war in Ukraine, North Korea’s nuclear program, and climate change was raised. However, Blinken acknowledged that there are still significant differences on core issues and that the US has failed to reach an agreement with China to reopen military-to-military channels.

The importance of communication links between the US and China to prevent accidents from escalating into a military confrontation was emphasized before the visit. While an agreement on this was not reached, Blinken’s meeting with Xi and the other Chinese officials may at least signal a slight improvement in bilateral relations.

During the meetings, both Blinken and Xi expressed the need to stabilize the relationship between the US and China. Xi emphasized that China respects the interests of the United States and does not seek to challenge or replace it, but also expects the US to respect China and not harm its legitimate rights and interests.

On the issue of Ukraine, Blinken appreciated China’s assurances that it is not providing lethal assistance to Russia. He welcomed Xi’s involvement in finding a just and durable solution to the conflict in Ukraine, which contrasts with the previous skepticism from US officials regarding China’s role in relation to Russia.

Despite the positive aspects of the meetings, there are still disagreements between the US and China. Blinken raised concerns about human rights violations in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong, and called for the release of detained US citizens in China. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining economic ties between the two countries.

Overall, the meetings between Blinken and Chinese officials have shown a shift in tone and a willingness to engage in dialogue. However, there are still challenges to be addressed, and it remains to be seen how the relationship between the US and China will develop in the future.
