President Biden extends his condolences to the people of Morocco following the devastating earthquake that has claimed over 2,000 lives.
“I express my deep sadness for the loss of life and the widespread destruction caused by the earthquake in Morocco,” the president stated in a official statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this tragic event.”
Biden reassured that the administration is actively working to ensure the safety of American citizens in Morocco and is ready to provide “any necessary assistance.”
“The United States stands in solidarity with Morocco and its esteemed leader, King Mohammed VI, during this challenging time,” he emphasized.
According to The Associated Press, the 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck approximately 50 miles south of Marrakech, claiming the lives of at least 2,012 individuals. Over 2,000 others were injured, with roughly 1,400 in critical condition.
The earthquake, the strongest in Morocco in 120 years, also caused significant damage to several historical structures in the old city of Marrakech, as reported by AP.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken conveyed his “heartfelt condolences” to the affected families in a separate statement on Saturday.
“As Morocco responds to this tragic event, the United States stands prepared to offer any necessary assistance,” Blinken wrote in a statement.
“Our thoughts are with the Moroccan people, and we extend unwavering support and solidarity to our Moroccan partners during this difficult time,” he added.
