‘Biden Energizes Supporters of Abortion Rights: ‘The Court’s Provocation to America’s Women to Speak Up’

President Biden emphasized the importance of reproductive rights on the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Speaking at the Mayflower Hotel in D.C., Biden acknowledged the court’s dare to be heard and the power of women in America. Earlier in the day, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, NARAL Pro-Choice America, and EMILY’s List endorsed his reelection bid. These endorsements, along with a rally organized by the Democratic National Committee, coincided with the anniversary of the landmark decision.

Reflecting on the midterm elections, Biden highlighted the electoral impact of women and the public’s support for protecting abortion rights. Despite this, over 20 states have passed laws restricting abortion access since Roe. Biden expressed confidence that the power of women will prevail and urged voters to elect more Democrats in 2024 to codify Roe and prevent a national abortion ban. He vowed to veto any such ban if it reached his desk.

Criticizing the GOP’s focus on abortion restrictions, Biden emphasized the need to address other pressing issues, such as paid leave. He signed an executive order to increase access to contraception and family planning, noting the importance of protecting those rights.

Justice Clarence Thomas’s concurring opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization sparked discussions about the constitutional right to birth control. In response, Biden has taken executive action to safeguard Americans’ ability to travel for abortion procedures and obtain the abortion pill.

Vice President Harris, known for her advocacy on this issue, joined Biden at the rally, accompanied by First Lady Jill Biden and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff. Their presence underlines the administration’s commitment to protecting reproductive rights.

In a recent NBC News poll, 61 percent of Americans expressed disapproval of the Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn Roe, an increase from 58 percent last August.
