The series “Painkiller” portrays the efforts of fictional lawyer Edie Flowers (Uzo Aduba) from the US attorney’s office as she attempts to sue Purdue Pharma during the mid-2000s. Despite their initial resistance, the office eventually reaches a deal with Purdue. The company pleads guilty to charges related to fraudulent marketing and misbranding of OxyContin.

Rudy Giuliani, who was hired by Purdue Pharma, played a significant role in reaching this agreement. Initially, Giuliani tried to undermine the case, but he later complained to James Comey, the deputy attorney general at the time, effectively holding up the prosecution. With Giuliani’s help, Purdue Pharma’s senior executives, who had pleaded guilty, avoided prison time. Instead, they paid fines totaling $34.5 million, while Purdue Pharma itself was fined $640 million.

Giuliani’s tactics also prevented a ban on Purdue Pharma’s future business with the federal government, allowing them to continue selling OxyContin without restrictions. This was despite the company’s guilty plea.

In response to “Painkiller,” a representative for Purdue Pharma expressed sympathy for those affected by the opioid crisis. They emphasized their focus on concluding their bankruptcy and redirecting funds towards addressing the crisis. The proposed settlement would dissolve Purdue Pharma and establish Knoa Pharma, a new company with a mission to combat the opioid crisis. The settlement is expected to provide over $10 billion for crisis abatement, overdose rescue medicines, and victim compensation.

On August 10, the Supreme Court temporarily halted Purdue Pharma’s planned bankruptcy settlement, which aimed to shield the Sackler family members from personal liability in opioid-related lawsuits.
