In a tragic incident in March 2021, Sarah Everard was brutally murdered by a police officer who is now serving life in prison. Shortly after her body was found in Kent, England, mourners gathered at a vigil in London to remember her. However, the vigil took a dark turn as two protesters, Patsy Stevenson and Dania Al-Obeid, were mistreated by the police. The Metropolitan Police has now issued a public apology to them and will compensate them for the harm caused, according to a report by Reuters. The images of Stevenson being restrained by officers during the vigil became the lasting symbol of the incident. Following the announcement of the settlement, Stevenson expressed the importance of holding the police accountable, while Al-Obeid shared her lack of trust in any police force, stating that she does not feel protected or safe.

A large-scale clash occurred between police and mourners during a vigil held for Sarah Everard, who was allegedly kidnapped and murdered by a police officer. Thousands of mourners gathered at Clapham Common in South London, near the spot where Everard was believed to have been kidnapped, to pay their respects. However, the event took an unfortunate turn as the police forcefully removed and handcuffed peaceful mourners, citing violation of coronavirus regulations, as reported by CNN. The use of excessive force by the police has sparked outrage, especially since the arrest of London police officer Wayne Couzens for Everard’s murder. Even Home Secretary Priti Patel expressed her distress over the incident in a tweet.

The Evening Standard reported that London Mayor Sadiq Khan is demanding an explanation and addressing allegations of male officers mishandling female mourners at the vigil. Metropolitan Police Service Assistant Commissioner Helen Ball defended the actions of the police, stating that their priority was ensuring the safety of the attendees. A total of four arrests were made during the vigil. Wayne Couzens, the 48-year-old police officer accused of Everard’s murder, appeared in court and has been remanded in custody. He is scheduled for another court appearance at London’s Central Criminal Court. (Read more London stories.)
