Sean Penn Launches Profanity-Laden Rant Against Will Smith for Oscars Slap

Sean Penn criticizes Will Smith and questions why the audience applauded him at the 2022 Oscars despite his violent outburst.

In an interview with Variety, Penn expressed his anger over the Oscars’ decision to prevent Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy from speaking at the event.

“The Oscars producer thought, ‘Oh, he’s not light-hearted enough.’ Well, guess what you got instead? Will Smith!” exclaimed Penn, who had filmed a documentary about the war in Ukraine.

Penn admitted that he only met Will Smith once, and he seemed pleasant. He acknowledged Smith’s exceptional performance in “King Richard,” which earned him the Best Actor Oscar.

However, Penn strongly criticized the decision to honor Smith despite his inappropriate behavior. He questioned why Smith was still being applauded for his worst moment as a person.

Penn, who had previously served jail time for assaulting a movie extra, referenced Smith’s onstage slap of comedian Chris Rock, which led to Smith’s temporary ban from the Oscars.

As someone with two Oscars, Penn believed that if Zelenskyy had been allowed to speak, the incident would never have occurred.

Penn also highlighted his own history of violence, including altercations with paparazzi and a domestic assault charge during his marriage to Madonna, though both parties denied the allegations.
