The arrest of six individuals for the assassination of Ecuadorian presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in Quito on Thursday has been announced by Ecuador’s Ministry of the Interior.
In an official statement regarding the murder, authorities revealed that they had apprehended six individuals, all of whom were of foreign nationality. According to The New York Times, Juan Zapata, the head of the Interior Ministry, confirmed that the suspects were Colombian nationals. After conducting raids in the Conocoto area of Quito and its surrounding regions, law enforcement personnel were able to locate the suspects, as well as a variety of weapons and vehicles.
The press release stated, “During the raids, the following items were seized: a rifle, a submachine gun, four pistols, three grenades, two rifle magazines, four boxes of ammunition, two motorcycles, and a stolen vehicle believed to have been used by the members of this criminal group.”
Villavicencio, aged 59, was widely recognized for his vocal opposition to corruption in Ecuador. It has been reported that he had been receiving death threats prior to his untimely demise during a political rally.
