Amid escalating tensions with North Korea, a second nuclear submarine from the US arrives in South Korea

The presence of a second nuclear submarine from the U.S. in South Korea has raised tensions with North Korea. The USS Annapolis, a nuclear-powered submarine, arrived at Jeju Island to resupply and participate in joint military exercises, as confirmed by South Korean military officials.

Additionally, the Annapolis may engage in joint military drills with South Korea. This development follows the recent docking of the USS Kentucky, marking the first visit by a U.S. nuclear submarine to South Korea in over four decades.

The decision to deploy these submarines was made by President Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol in order to deter North Korea’s nuclear threats. The North Korean government responded with a warning of a potential nuclear response.

In response, North Korea conducted missile tests following the docking of the USS Kentucky. The situation escalated further as the U.N. Command engaged in conversations with North Korean officials regarding the whereabouts of Pvt. Travis King, a U.S. soldier who recently crossed into North Korean territory.
