Alert: Post-Tropical Cyclone Lee Approaching New England and Canada, Millions Under Storm Watches

Post-Tropical Cyclone Lee Threatens Coastal New England and Eastern Canada

The National Hurricane Center downgraded Hurricane Lee to a post-tropical cyclone, but millions of people in coastal New England and eastern Canada are still under storm watches and warnings. Severe conditions are anticipated in Massachusetts, Maine, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia.

The storm is currently located south of Halifax, Nova Scotia and east of Eastport, Maine. Moving north at 25 mph with maximum wind gusts of 80 mph, it poses a significant threat to the region. States of emergency have been declared in Massachusetts and Maine, as heavy rain and weakened trees increase the risk of damage and power outages.

As of now, there are already 20,000 power outages reported from Massachusetts to Maine, with downed trees in some areas. Forecasters project peak gusts of up to 70 mph along the coast of eastern Maine, with gusts up to 50 mph extending over 400 miles from Moosehead Lake to the ocean.

In preparation for the storm, cruise ships have sought refuge in Portland, while lobstermen have pulled their traps from the water and brought their boats inland. High waves, potential erosion, and power outages are expected in coastal areas, including parts of Maine where up to 5 inches of rain is forecast.

Despite the potential for violence, some New Englanders remain nonchalant, comparing Hurricane Lee to winter nor’easters without snow. However, officials continue to urge residents to take all necessary precautions.
