Actress Halts Play in New York Citing Breathing Difficulties

A matinee performance of Broadway show, Prima Facie was halted by its lead actress, Jodie Comer, just ten minutes in due to the increasingly alarming air quality in the city resulting from the Canadian wildfires. The actress expressed difficulty breathing as her reason for stopping the show, as reported by Variety. Dani Arlington, Comer’s understudy, was later brought in to continue the one-woman play.

In related news, Hamilton and Camelot cancelled their evening shows, including Shakespeare in the Park production of Hamlet, which was also scrapped. Variety reported that cast members of Hamilton called in sick, forcing the cancelation just hours before the show was scheduled to begin. Performances were set to resume Thursday, however.

Concerns about the air quality has also raised questions whether the impending Tony Awards, set to be held on Sunday and broadcast live in New York, will be postponed. No official word has been released regarding the situation. While most Broadway shows have decided to push through the crisis, some, like Prima Facie, have opted to prioritize the health and safety of their actors and audience. Refunds or ticket exchanges were offered to affected patrons.
