A Disquieting Display in Moscow

António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, made a well-intentioned trip to Moscow in an effort to bring peace amidst the invasion of Ukraine. However, this move carried the risk of granting Russia’s leaders the false credibility of appearing alongside a representative of the organization responsible for upholding international law.

Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, took advantage of the situation to assert that his country was faithfully adhering to a system that had been taken hostage by the Western world. He reiterated the false claim that Russia was conducting a “special military operation” against Ukrainian Nazis, emphasizing their efforts to avoid civilian casualties and provide aid to those affected by the conflict.

Yet, Mr. Guterres is well aware that these statements are baseless. During the interview with Russian TV viewers, perhaps for the first time, he made it clear that their country had been criticized by the UN for violating Ukraine’s territorial integrity. Mr. Lavrov attempted to argue that countries voting against Russia had been coerced by the United States, but Mr. Guterres countered with an indisputable fact: Russian troops were present in Ukraine, while the opposite was not true.

If the Secretary-General managed to sow seeds of doubt among Russians who are constantly fed propaganda about their government’s illegal and brutal invasion, then this visit may have served a constructive purpose. Otherwise, it was a grotesque spectacle in which Mr. Lavrov tried to depict Russia as the victim.

Following his time in Moscow, Mr. Guterres proceeded to Kyiv. Ideally, he should have visited Kyiv first to demonstrate the UN’s recognition of who is right and who is wrong in this conflict. As President Zelensky aptly stated, “There are no bodies in the streets of Moscow.”
