What to look for in a portable generator
If you’re unfamiliar with portable generators and how they work, selecting the best one for your needs can be an overwhelming task. Consider these factors while shopping:
Type
There are two main types of portable generators: conventional and inverter generators. They generate electricity differently.
- Conventional generators have an engine that powers a motor, which uses an alternator to generate AC electricity. These generators are easy to repair and maintain, but less efficient than inverter generators due to their energy output being directly linked to engine RPMs. Most of our guide recommendations are conventional generators.
- Inverter generators are more complex. They convert AC electricity generated by the motor into stable DC electricity, and then back to AC, adjusting it to meet the specific device’s power requirements. Inverter generators are more fuel efficient than standard generators as they produce electricity based on demand.
Fuel
All portable generators require fuel to generate electricity. Gasoline is the most common fuel, but some use propane, diesel, or natural gas. Consider the fuel availability and storage options in your area when choosing a generator. Dual-fuel generators accept multiple fuel types, offering convenience and flexibility. Wattage (starting and running)
Portable generators have two wattage outputs: starting and running. Starting wattage is for brief periods, while running wattage is sustained over time. Calculate the total energy consumption of the devices you plan to power to ensure your generator meets your needs. Check the data plates or instruction manuals of appliances for their wattage requirements.
Outlets
Make sure your generator has sufficient outlets and the correct type to accommodate the devices you need to power. Smaller appliances work with standard outlets, while high-wattage applications may require larger outlets.
Weight
While portable generators are meant to be transported, they can be heavy. Consider your physical capabilities when choosing a generator. Ensure you can safely move it from storage to the desired location, which should be outside in an open area away from windows and doors. If you need a larger capacity but can’t handle the weight, consider using multiple smaller generators that can be paired together.
Noise
Portable generators can be noisy, especially when running for extended periods. If noise level is a concern, compare the decibel (dBA) specifications of different generators to choose the quietest option. Inverter generators are typically quieter than standard generators, and solar-powered models operate silently.
Safety
