Sept. 20 (UPI) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged the United Nations to reform the Security Council, stating that Russia’s veto power has been misused to hinder action against their invasion of Ukraine.

Zelensky, who addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, left the chamber on Wednesday before the Russian delegation could speak at the council, preventing a potential heated confrontation between the two parties.

“Most of the international community acknowledges the truth about this war,” Zelensky emphasized during his address to the Security Council. “We must acknowledge that the United Nations finds itself in a deadlock when it comes to matters of aggression.

“World leaders are exploring new platforms and alliances that could mitigate the devastating scale of problems encountered within these walls, where rhetoric takes precedence over actual solutions, and the aspiration to compromise with killers supersedes the protection of lives.”

He criticized Russia and its allies for disregarding the United Nations and continuing their invasion of Ukraine without any consequences.

“These experiences have fundamentally changed the role of the United Nations,” Zelensky stated. “Humanity no longer relies on the United Nations to defend national borders.”

While resolutions condemning Russia’s invasion and urging its withdrawal have been voted on by the General Assembly, they hold no binding authority and merely serve as records of statements.

“Russia’s violation of the United Nations Charter and international law through its invasion of Ukraine exacerbates geopolitical tensions and divisions, threatens regional stability, increases nuclear threats, and creates profound rifts in our evolving multipolar world,” said U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres at the Security Council.

“The war has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of civilians, inflicted injuries, destroyed livelihoods, and traumatized an entire generation of children.”
