Zelensky Raises Concerns about Russian Activity at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant

Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine

In his nightly address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a claim on Tuesday that Russian forces have placed objects resembling explosives on the roof of certain buildings at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant located in southern Ukraine.

Zelensky’s suggestion warns of a possible false flag attack on Ukrainian infrastructure orchestrated by Russia, following a catastrophic failure of a hydroelectric dam in June which inflicted severe damage in southern Ukraine.

While Ukraine holds Russia responsible for the dam failure, Russia has retaliated by placing the blame on Ukraine for the destruction of the dam.

Furthermore, Zelensky emphasized the potential impact of radiation if an explosion were to occur at the power plant, stating that it would affect everyone.

“The world witnesses – and cannot ignore – that the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is endangered solely by Russia and no other party,” remarked Zelensky.

“Regrettably, there was no immediate and extensive response to the act of terrorism at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant. This inaction could potentially provoke the Kremlin to commit further acts of malevolence. It is the duty of everyone worldwide to prevent this, as the effects of radiation transcend borders,” he added.

The Zaporizhzhia power plant was seized by Russian forces in March 2022, raising significant concerns of potential destruction to deter Ukrainian advancements.

Despite these concerns, the power plant continued to operate under the management of the Russian energy company Rosatom. However, in September 2022, the plant’s reactors were placed in “cold shutdown” mode to minimize the risk of damage during the war. Nevertheless, any explosions at the plant could still lead to a nuclear meltdown or the dispersal of radiation.

Just last week, Ukrainian military intelligence made an announcement that Russian personnel were leaving the power plant, once again heightening fears of a potential attack.
