Zelensky Points Out Russia’s Clear Weakness Amid Wagner Rebellion

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky provided a response on Saturday regarding the internal conflict between Russian military forces and the private military contractor Wagner Group, highlighting “Russia’s evident weakness.”

In a Twitter post, Zelensky stated, “Everyone who chooses the path of evil ultimately destroys themselves. For a long time, Russia has utilized propaganda to mask its weakness and the incompetence of its government. But now, there is so much chaos that no lie can conceal it.”

Without explicitly mentioning his name, Zelensky referenced Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that he “scares by the year 1917,” which marks the fall of the Russian Empire during the revolution. However, Zelensky believes that Putin’s actions will result in nothing beyond this historical reference.

Zelensky noted, “Russia’s weakness is undeniable. It is a comprehensive weakness. And the longer Russia keeps its troops and mercenaries in our land, the more chaos, pain, and problems it will encounter later on. This, too, is evident.”

Zelensky’s statement coincided with the Wagner Group’s mutiny against Russia, which played a significant role in the country’s war in Ukraine. Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Wagner Group, accused Moscow of lying about the invasion’s motives and Russian military leaders of deceiving Putin while trying to annihilate Wagner. He called for an armed rebellion to remove Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu from power.

On Saturday, Prigozhin revealed that Wagner Group fighters had crossed from Ukraine into Russia and entered Rostov-on-Don, where the Russian military headquarters for the southern region is located. A British intelligence assessment from the U.K. Defense Ministry confirmed that “Wagner has almost certainly occupied key security sites, including the HQ which runs Russia’s military operations in Ukraine.”

According to the assessment, this situation “represents the most significant challenge to the Russian state in recent times.”

While the Russian government has denied Prigozhin’s claims, they have initiated a criminal case against him for inciting armed rebellion.

Zelensky asserted, “Ukraine has the capability to protect Europe from the spread of Russian malevolence and chaos. We will maintain our resilience, unity, and strength.”

Although Ukraine has experienced heavy losses, their counteroffensive launched this month has achieved some success in its initial stages.
