The United States is reportedly contemplating imposing new restrictions on the export of artificial intelligence chips to China, as per the Wall Street Journal. People familiar with the matter revealed this information, causing the shares of Nvidia to decline by over 2 percent and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to fall about 1.5 percent in extended trading.

The Commerce Department is likely to halt chip shipments from companies like Nvidia to customers in China starting from July, according to the report. Nvidia, Micron, and AMD are among the U.S. chipmakers caught in the crossfire between China and the Biden administration.

In September, Nvidia announced that U.S. officials had requested the company to stop exporting two leading computing chips for artificial intelligence work to China. Later on, Nvidia, led by Jensen Huang, stated that it would introduce a new advanced chip called the A800 in China to comply with export control rules. The company also made adjustments to its flagship H100 chip earlier this year to meet regulations.

However, the proposed restrictions by the Commerce Department would prohibit the sale of even A800 chips without a special U.S. export license, added the report. Reuters’ request for comment from the Commerce Department remains unanswered.
