Anchor Brewing, a historic San Francisco-based brewery, faced potential closure earlier this month. However, there may be hope for its survival. The brewery’s unionized staff is currently working behind the scenes to gather funds to purchase the bankrupt company from its Japanese owner, Sapporo. The workers are determined to have a fair chance at continuing their jobs and preserving the legacy of Anchor Brewing. Unfortunately, the iconic Anchor Brewing Company has announced its closure after a long history that includes surviving the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco. The brewery’s spokesperson revealed that mounting financial losses and economic pressures have made it no longer feasible to continue operations. The brewery, which was acquired by Sapporo Holdings in 2017, is being liquidated to settle its debts. Anchor Brewing’s 61 employees have been informed of the closure. Despite the closure, Anchor Brewing plans to keep its Anchor Public Taps taproom open temporarily while there is inventory remaining. This includes the 2023 Anchor Christmas Ale, although the traditional nationwide release has been canceled. The brewery, recognized as a pioneer in the American craft brewing industry, acknowledges its significance and historical value to San Francisco. There is a possibility that a potential buyer may emerge during the liquidation process. (Source: AP)
