A 76-year-old woman who had been pronounced dead shocked her relatives by knocking on her coffin during her wake earlier this month. Unfortunately, her family has now announced that she has passed away after spending seven days in intensive care. Gilberto Barbera Montoya, the woman’s son, revealed that doctors at the state hospital confirmed her death on Friday evening. Ecuador’s health ministry issued a statement confirming that Bella Montoya died from an ischemic stroke after a week in intensive care. They mentioned that Montoya had been under constant surveillance, but did not provide further details about the medical investigation.
Barbera Montoya expressed his dissatisfaction, stating that he has not yet received any report from the authorities regarding the medical explanation of what happened. He warned that this issue will not be left unresolved. Additionally, a formal complaint has been filed by the deceased woman’s sister, who is seeking to identify the doctor responsible for declaring her dead initially. Bella Montoya reportedly regained consciousness and started knocking on her coffin on June 9, after spending five hours at a funeral home in Babahoyo, located about 130 miles southwest of Quito.
The remains of Montoya, a retired nurse, have been returned to the same funeral home where she woke up. Her son mentioned that she will be buried in a public cemetery. The country’s ministry of health has set up a technical committee to review the process of issuing death certificates.
