A South Carolina woman, Stacy Michelle Costner Rabon, 50, has been sentenced to life in prison for the 1992 death of her newborn daughter. Rabon was found guilty of homicide by child abuse by a York County jury. Under the law in 1992, which provided for shorter sentences for serious convictions, she will be eligible for parole in 2031, as reported by the AP. Despite Rabon’s plea for mercy, Circuit Court Judge Bill McKinnon deemed the life sentence appropriate given the vulnerability of the victim. “A newborn comes into this world looking for its parents to protect it,” Judge Mckinnon stated. “This baby was stabbed more than 50 times.”

After nearly 30 years, authorities have announced the arrest of the mother of an infant girl who was found stabbed and dead in a South Carolina river in August 1992. Stacy Michelle Costner Rabon, 48, of Rock Hill, SC, has been charged with homicide by child abuse in connection with the girl’s death. If convicted, she could face a sentence ranging from 30 years to life. The baby, only a few hours old at the time of death, was discovered wrapped in a bedsheet inside a plastic grocery bag by a swimmer on the Catawba River. A coroner’s report determined that the cause of death was suffocation, despite the presence of stab wounds. The community named the baby Angel Hope and provided a burial for her at a cemetery in Rock Hill.

The case was reexamined last October, and detectives submitted DNA from the bedsheet for testing at the York County Forensic Biology Lab. A DNA match linking Rabon to the baby was found, thanks to her 2019 arrest on a drug distribution charge that prompted her DNA collection for the national DNA database. Rabon, who did not deny that the baby was hers, was arrested on Tuesday and is currently in custody at the York County Detention Center. During a news conference, York County Sheriff Kevin Tolson expressed gratitude towards the detectives and DNA analysts for providing closure in a case that has haunted the community for years. He emphasized the importance of giving the child, now known as Baby Angel Justice, the justice she deserves.
