Will Giants Tight End, Darren Waller, Play Against Cowboys? Hamstring Injury Raises Doubts!

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — New York Giants tight end Darren Waller has been added to the final injury report due to a hamstring injury ahead of Sunday night’s opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

Waller is now listed as questionable for the game, marking his first appearance on the injury report this week.

The hamstring injury is not solely from an incident at Friday’s practice, as a source revealed that Waller experienced tightness in his hamstring later in the week. However, the fact that he was able to participate in practice is a positive sign.

Last season, Waller struggled with hamstring issues, playing in only nine out of 17 games for the Las Vegas Raiders.

During last year’s training camp, Waller suffered a left hamstring injury, and a right hamstring injury kept him sidelined for most of the season. However, it is currently unknown which leg Waller injured during Friday’s practice in the sweltering New Jersey heat.

Injuries have been a recurring concern for Waller in recent years, as he has played in only 20 out of 34 games over the past two seasons.

Until Friday afternoon, it seemed that Waller would enter the regular season without any issues. He performed exceptionally well during practice throughout the summer, showing no signs of a problem. The hope was for his talents to shine in Sunday night’s game against the Cowboys. In the preseason, Waller caught three passes on four targets in a single drive.

If Waller is unable to play, second-year tight end Daniel Bellinger would likely start in his place.

Waller has acknowledged that he adjusted his approach to the offseason in order to prioritize staying healthy this season. Additionally, he was one of several players granted “vet days” by coach Brian Daboll to help maintain his freshness.

Reflecting on his mindset, Waller stated, “The biggest adjustment I’ve had to make going into this offseason is ensuring that I’m peaking at the right time. I pushed myself too hard in the 2018, 2019, and 2020 offseasons, to the point where it almost became excessive. Now, it’s about finding efficiency and ensuring that I peak when the season starts. Showing up to training camp exhausted doesn’t set me or the team up for success. For me, it’s about peaking at the right time.”

Waller has achieved two 1,000-yard seasons (2019-20) and recorded 28 receptions for 388 yards and three touchdowns last year.
