Sept. 9 (UPI) — Coco Gauff staged a remarkable comeback to secure her first Grand Slam victory. Despite being overpowered early on by Aryna Sabalenka, Gauff’s speed and relentless defense allowed her to rally and win the 2023 U.S. Open women’s singles final. The match took place in Flushing, NY, and Gauff expressed her shock and joy at the result, stating, “I knew if I didn’t give it my all, I had no shot at winning.”
At only 19 years old, Gauff becomes the youngest American to win the U.S. Open since Serena Williams in 1999. In her victory speech, Gauff expressed gratitude to those who did not believe in her and revealed her determination to defy expectations. She broke Sabalenka’s serve five times, demonstrating her tactical skill and ability to control the game. Gauff’s victory marks a significant milestone in her young career, propelling her to third place in the WTA singles rankings.
The stunning turnaround in Gauff’s performance left her opponent, Sabalenka, in awe. Despite the loss, Sabalenka praised Gauff’s incredible skill and predicted many more finals between the two. Sabalenka used strong serves and returns to keep Gauff off-balance initially, but Gauff’s resilience and strategic play ultimately secured her victory. Gauff’s final shot, a powerful backhand winner, sealed her win and led to an emotional celebration on the court.
