“Tourism must evolve and become regenerative, as the current model is unsustainable,’ Intrepid chief says
According to a recent report by Intrepid Travel, a small group tour company, the traditional model of tourism is facing sustainability challenges, and a change towards regenerative practices is necessary to prevent popular destinations from facing “extinction”.
The report suggests that one of the measures that may be introduced in the future is the implementation of “personal carbon allowances” to reduce carbon emissions associated with travel. These allowances, which would be in the form of carbon ration passports, would require individuals to limit their carbon footprint in accordance with the global carbon budget, set at 750 billion tonnes until 2050.
The report also predicts that by 2040, there may be restrictions on the amount of travel allowed per year. This could mean that travelers have to give up the immersive travel experiences they currently enjoy.
The report, created in collaboration with foresight agency, The Future Laboratory, warns that climate change could make popular destinations like Greece and Majorca too hot for summer holidays, leading to a shift towards cooler locations like Belgium, Slovenia, and Poland.
Furthermore, the report states that the lack of action from the travel industry in addressing climate change will result in further catastrophic consequences. It emphasizes the need for the tourism sector to transition towards regenerative practices to ensure sustainable development.
Intrepid Travel also envisions the emergence of a group of “travel transformers” who prioritize the social and environmental impact of their holidays. These individuals will drive the transition towards regenerative travel practices.

Tui, a travel company, predicts that holidaymakers will increasingly choose cooler destinations and travel during seasons with milder temperatures.
