Why is Ovo sending debt threats without an account? | Money-saving tips

Are you facing an issue with Ovo Energy? Let me share my story. During my year in Ireland, I had my mail redirected to my father’s address in Scotland.

Upon returning to the UK, I received a letter from Ovo claiming that I owed them £1,690 for an overdue bill. The strange thing is, I have never had an account with Ovo or SSE Energy (Ovo acquired SSE’s retail arm in 2020), nor have I ever lived with my father at that particular address.

Despite my efforts to explain the situation, I am now being pursued by a debt collection agency, and the bill has escalated to £2,121. To make matters worse, the email I received warns that Ovo shares data with credit reference agencies, potentially impacting my credit rating.

Ovo is demanding documents that I simply don’t possess in order to clear the account. It’s absurd that someone who has never held an account with Ovo or any of its affiliated companies should be subjected to such stress.

Ovo Energy is no stranger to this column. After contacting them on your behalf, we successfully halted the debt collection activity, and your erroneously created account now has a zero balance.

The confusion arises from how billing is managed. Despite your father’s long-term residency and timely bill payments, his account is still under “the occupier.” Previously, he was with SSE Energy Services, and your name was mistakenly added as the account holder when it transitioned to Ovo.

Ovo clarifies, “The property is owned by your father, and the account remained under ‘the occupier’ until your name was added. We have ceased all activity under your name and advised your father to register as the named account holder.”

This is not the first case where an unnamed account has caused issues, and I believe it adds unnecessary complications, especially when mistakes occur.

However, considering that the bills were being paid at that address, one would expect the dots to be connected before sending threatening letters.
