Why I Became a Republican after serving as a Democratic state representative

Since 2021, Representative Mesha Mainor has been serving as a Democrat in Georgia’s House of Representatives, specifically representing the 56th district. However, Mainor made the decision to leave the Democratic Party this week and switch to the Republican Party due to her dissatisfaction with the recent policies supported by her party colleagues. In an open letter to the nation, Mainor explains her reasons for this switch.

Dear fellow Americans,

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Mesha Mainor, a proud Atlanta native born in 1975 to Shirley Mainor and Willie Denson. I grew up in Atlanta’s westside community, which is renowned for producing some of ATL’s greatest rappers such as Shawty Lo, T.I., Killer Mike, Lil Baby, Lil Jon, Bone Crusher, Trillville, Lil’ Scrappy, and more. During my upbringing, I had the privilege of befriending individuals like 2 Chainz, Rasheeda, and Da Kaperz. Like many of us, I embraced the Democratic party as a black person, assuming it was the default choice for all of us.

However, as life progressed over the last four decades, I came to realize that things are not as straightforward as they seem. Life is complex, and not everything can be viewed in black and white terms. Sometimes, if you’re fortunate, you are blessed with God’s discernment. Therefore, on Tuesday, I made the momentous decision to leave the Georgia Democratic Party, which has strong ties to my family and friends, and join the Georgia Republican Party.

One of the key factors influencing my decision is the alarming rise in crime within Atlanta in recent months. As a lawmaker for the past three years, I have come to the realization that the principles of the Democratic Party do not always align with the best interests of the black community. A prime example of this disconnect can be seen in how Democrats handled the “illegal” immigration of Haitians during the Clinton administration, abandoning black people without any form of support when they needed it the most. Furthermore, Democrats allocated nearly $10 billion to construct more prisons through the 1994 Crime Bill, resulting in the over-incarceration of black individuals and longer sentences.

In the present day, I urge black Americans to reflect upon the question, “What has a Democrat done for you lately?” While I cannot speak for Janet Jackson, I dare say that Democrats have not adequately addressed the concerns and needs of the black community. Black children in marginalized communities struggle with basic reading and math skills, with shockingly low academic proficiency rates ranging from 2% to 3% in my district. The black-led criminal justice system is failing to provide effective support, as exemplified by the recent investigation initiated by the US Department of Justice into the deplorable conditions at the Fulton County Jail, where a man tragically died due to a bed bug infestation. Crime continues to run rampant, leading to fear and insecurity among the citizens of Atlanta. While Democrats advocated for defunding the police, I stood with the Republican Party in supporting the preservation of local law enforcement agencies, ensuring the safety and protection of our communities. My vote aimed to prioritize the rights of victims and their families, rather than tolerating lawless prosecutors who exploit their positions for personal gain instead of serving the people.

Additionally, I voted in favor of initiatives that support children attending underperforming schools, offering them the choice of parental or school-choice options. It is essential to debunk the misguided notion that school vouchers exclusively benefit the wealthy. This misconception is often perpetuated by opponents of school choice, who are frequently affiliated with the Democratic Party and prioritize the interests of teachers’ unions over the welfare of children. I stand by the decisions I have made and my choice to switch parties, and I wholeheartedly intend to seek re-election as a Republican candidate.

In Exodus 9:9-14, we witness the normalization of a slave mentality when individuals are shackled by oppression and a sense of hopelessness that convinces them failure is more preferable than venturing into the unknown. My hope and prayer are that I can help liberate those unintentionally subdued in spirit, revealing that the spectacle of macro-politics merely seeks to alarm and deter us from the truths that truly impact our lives, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. Republicans are dedicated to addressing these vital issues, and I am eagerly looking forward to better serving my constituents and delivering tangible results as a member of the GOP.

Sincerely,

Mesha Mainor
