Gilas Girls in the Fiba U16 Women’s Asian Championship Division B. –FIBA BASKETBALL
The Gilas Girls basketball team is on a roll in the FIBA U16 Women’s Asian Championship, sweeping their three elimination round games and impressively defeating Jordan 106-58. However, coach Pat Aquino is reminding his players of a bitter lesson learned last year when they were eliminated in the semifinals despite a strong start.
According to Aquino, “The morale of the team is very high, because they are excited making the semis. But I also told them of our team’s story last year when we were gearing up for the championship and got booted out in the semis. It’s never nice to be too relaxed. We just need to be ready for what can happen.”
The Philippines has been striving to regain its Division A status for over a decade, and Aquino wants to ensure that his team stays focused and resilient. In their previous campaign, the Gilas Girls also had a 3-0 start but fell short in the semifinals and finished in third place.
The Filipinos will face either Malaysia or Iran in their upcoming game, with Singapore still having a chance to qualify for the next round. The team has been led by standout player Kimi Sayson, who contributed 19 points, seven steals, six assists, and four rebounds in their latest victory. Ava Fajardo, Nevaeh Smith, Ryan Kelly Nair, Scarlett Mercado, and Demicah Arnaldo also made significant contributions to the team’s success.
The Gilas Girls demonstrated an impressive defensive performance against Jordan, recording 28 steals and capitalizing on 45 points off turnovers. With their solid teamwork and determination, they aim to secure promotion to Division A and make history for Philippine women’s basketball.
