Why Do Certain Colds Feel Like They Never End? New Research Reveals the Answer

Did you know that lingering symptoms are not exclusive to COVID-19? According to a study published in the EClinicalMedicine journal by The Lancet, “long colds” can have symptoms that last for more than four weeks. This research, conducted at Queen Mary University of London, aligns with the experiences of individuals who have dealt with prolonged symptoms after a respiratory infection, despite testing negative for COVID-19. Adrian Martineau, a clinical professor at Queen Mary University, states, “Our findings may chime with the experience of people who have struggled with prolonged symptoms after having a respiratory infection despite testing negative for COVID-19 on a nose or throat swab.”

These findings suggest that non-COVID acute respiratory infections, such as colds, influenza, and pneumonia, can have unrecognized long-lasting effects on health. The Guardian reports that the long-term symptoms caused by these infections can last for more than four weeks. While the effects are not as severe as those of long COVID, which affects a similar percentage of individuals, long colds can still have a significant impact on individuals’ well-being. NBC News reports that certain symptoms commonly associated with long COVID, such as issues with taste and smell, are less common with long colds. Martineau emphasizes the need for further research to uncover why some individuals are more affected by these lasting symptoms than others, in order to develop appropriate treatments.
