Experts argue that Britain should follow America’s lead by establishing its own UFO task force to investigate potential extraterrestrial sightings. They criticize the UK Government for not taking the issue seriously and warn of potential implications for national defense. Nick Pope, a former UFO investigator for the British military, calls for the Ministry of Defence to restart investigations and set up a task force. He accuses defense officials of having a closed-minded mindset that may lead to missing potential threats. The UK Ministry of Defence closed its UFO desk in 2009 and has not replaced it. The Project Condign report, which investigated over 10,000 sightings, concluded that 80% of the cases were easily explained, 19% were secret military craft, and only 1% remained mysterious. However, the report acknowledged that unexplained sightings may represent an unknown plasma but pose no threat. Despite this, Philip Mantle, a former director of investigations at the British UFO Research Association, believes it would be pointless to set up a UFO task force in the UK due to the lack of interest from the MoD and the scientific community. In contrast, NASA in the US recently released a report on over 800 potential alien sightings and stated that mysterious flying objects pose a threat to American airspace. Mr. Pope argues that as a NATO ally, the UK should be concerned about this threat as well. He suggests that the UK leverage its intelligence community and establish a task force similar to the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office. A petition has also been created in the UK to establish an investigatory office on UFOs/UAPs. The petition requires 10,000 signatures for a government response and 100,000 for consideration in Parliament. Despite dismissing the extraterrestrial hypothesis, NASA’s report calls for further study of UFOs due to unsolved cases. NASA Chief Bill Nelson announced that a new UFO research director would help implement the report’s recommendations. The Pentagon is also conducting a separate UFO investigation with the intelligence and military communities. A recent release by the Pentagon reveals characteristics of a typical UFO, including its round shape, white or silver color, and size of 3 to 13 feet.
