White House Considers NATO Membership for Ukraine Unlikely in the Near Future, Citing Potential Tensions with Russia

In a recent interview with CNN, John Kirby, the White House national security spokesman, stated that Ukraine’s NATO membership is unlikely to happen anytime soon due to the ongoing war. He explained that granting Ukraine membership would essentially put NATO at war with Russia.

Last week, President Biden expressed similar concerns, stating that Ukraine is not yet ready for NATO membership. He emphasized that NATO members have a responsibility to defend each other, so accepting Ukraine while it is still engaged in a war would result in all NATO members being at war with Russia.

Kirby reiterated this sentiment, stating that while they believe NATO is in Ukraine’s future, certain reforms need to be implemented before Ukraine can be considered for membership. These reforms include good governance, rule of law, and political reforms. He acknowledged the challenges Ukraine faces in pursuing these reforms while being at war.

Ukrainian President Zelensky took to Twitter earlier in the day, expressing frustration with the discussions surrounding Ukraine’s membership and criticizing the alliance for not providing a clear timeline. Kirby responded to Zelensky’s comments, acknowledging the frustrations and affirming the White House’s understanding of Ukraine’s desire to end the war swiftly.

Today, President Biden met with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg to discuss Ukraine’s aspirations to join the alliance. Ahead of the meeting in Vilnius, Lithuania, Biden expressed agreement with the proposed language regarding Ukraine’s future NATO membership.

Zelensky and Biden are expected to hold a one-on-one meeting during the Vilnius summit in the coming days.
