Which? names Liverpool John Lennon as the UK’s top airport for 2023, London City comes in second, and Manchester T3 retains its ranking as the worst due to overcrowding.

Liverpool John Lennon Airport has been crowned as the best airport in the UK, according to a survey conducted by Which?. The survey asked nearly 4,000 travellers to rate their experiences at 24 UK airports and terminals. Liverpool John Lennon Airport received a remarkable customer score of 82%, with travellers describing their experience at the airport as “first class”. The airport received praise for its efficient check-in and security processes, earning it five stars in these categories. Travellers also commended the airport’s friendly and helpful staff. This is the second consecutive year that Liverpool John Lennon Airport has been recognized as a Which? Recommended Provider.

London City Airport took second place in the rankings with a score of 78%. The airport’s convenient transport links and relaxed atmosphere made it a popular choice for business travellers. London City Airport received five stars for check-in and security queues, thanks to the installation of new scanners that eliminated the need for liquid restrictions and the removal of electronic items from bags. The airport boasted some of the shortest security waiting times in the survey, with an average estimated queue time of just 10 minutes.

Southampton Airport secured third place in the rankings with a score of 77%. Travellers were particularly impressed with the airport’s short queue times at check-in and security. Birmingham Airport, on the other hand, recorded the highest average reported waiting time for security queues, with travellers waiting an average of 29 minutes.

At the bottom of the table, Manchester Airport’s Terminal 3 ranked last with a customer score of only 38%. Travellers described their experience at Terminal 3 as “dispiriting from start to finish”, and criticized the long queues and poor customer service. Luton and Belfast International airports also received low scores, with customers expressing dissatisfaction with the queues and lack of amenities.

Rory Boland, Editor of Which? Travel, advised travellers to consider smaller airports for a more positive travel experience, as they generally have shorter queue times and better customer service. Despite the poor rankings, both Manchester and Luton airports claimed to be beloved by the majority of travellers.

In summary, Liverpool John Lennon Airport has been named the best airport in the UK, with London City Airport and Southampton Airport ranking second and third respectively. Manchester Airport’s Terminal 3 scored the lowest in the survey, alongside Luton and Belfast International airports. Travellers are encouraged to choose smaller airports for a smoother travel experience.
