Next Defence Secretary announced: Grant Shapps to take on the role

Grant Shapps has assumed the position of Defence Secretary after Ben Wallace’s resignation this morning. In accepting the role, Mr. Shapps expressed his “honour” and gratitude towards Rishi Sunak for appointing him, while acknowledging the significant contributions made by Mr. Wallace in shaping UK defense and global security.

On Twitter, Mr. Shapps stated, “As I commence my work at the Ministry of Defence, I eagerly anticipate collaborating with the courageous men and women of our Armed Forces who safeguard our nation’s security. I also commit to continuing the UK’s support for Ukraine in their fight against Putin’s brutal invasion.”

Mr. Wallace, who had publicly stated his intent to resign since July, expressed in his resignation letter, “After deep reflection, I have made the decision to step down and focus on neglected aspects of my life, as well as explore new opportunities. Having held my parliamentary seat since 2005, it is now time for me to prioritize personal growth.”

Praising Mr. Sunak’s support for the Ministry of Defence, Mr. Wallace stated that the department was returning to its former status as a world-class institution, with exceptional personnel. In response, Mr. Sunak commended Mr. Wallace’s distinguished service to the UK.
