However, this summer, Canadian Blood Services entered a weaker position than previous years, making it even more challenging to maintain a sufficient blood supply. The recent wildfires in Kelowna, British Columbia, alone resulted in the loss of 300 collections of whole blood and disrupted collection at a plasma site.
The wildfires have been a major concern this summer, with 15 million hectares of land already affected. In British Columbia and the Northwest Territories, various wildfires have caused significant damage to properties and threatened communities. While progress has been made in fighting the fires, it is still not safe for residents to return to certain areas.
The extreme weather events and wildfires have also impacted Canadian Blood Services’ ability to carry out appointments. Some staff members have been unavailable, and donors have had to cancel appointments due to safety concerns. Combined with the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused a drop in blood donations, the organization is now urgently seeking help to fill 10,000 appointment slots.
To address the shortage, Canadian Blood Services is hoping for increased participation in the fall as people return to their routines. They emphasize that two appointments are needed to secure one collection, as only around 50% of appointments result in a donation. Giving blood is a quick and impactful way to save lives, taking only about an hour of a donor’s time.
