Revo’s vegan salmon is an unmatched plant-based protein powerhouse, packed with essential nutrients such as omega-3, all nine amino acids, and vitamins A, B2, B3, B6, B12, and D2. According to their website, since their production commenced, they have helped protect over 18,000 fish. The vegan alternative also boasts impressive environmental credentials, emitting 77% to 86% less CO2 compared to regular salmon and using a mere 5% of the fresh water typically required. While Revo revolutionizes vegan seafood, Steakholder Foods, an Israeli firm, has made waves in the industry by creating the world’s first 3D bio-printed grouper. In collaboration with Umami Meats, Steakholder Foods’ CEO Mihir Pershad highlighted the environmental benefits of their product, stating, “Our 3D-printed grouper is ready to cook straight from the printer, providing a guilt-free alternative to traditional fishing methods.” Embracing a cell-based approach, Steakholder Foods uses animal cells to cultivate meat, ensuring the protection of animals.

The year 2021 also witnessed regulatory milestones in the realm of lab-grown meat. Upside Foods and Good Meat obtained permission from the US Department of Agriculture to sell “cell-cultivated” meat that circumvents animal slaughter. The Food and Drug Administration followed suit by declaring cell-cultured lab-made chicken as safe to consume. Unlike Revo’s vegan salmon that contains no animal components, lab meat is derived from live animal cells or stored cell banks, grown in bioreactors.
