West Ham United Outplays Arsenal with 3-1 Victory: In-Depth Match Report

A disappointing 3-1 defeat against West Ham United at London Stadium on Wednesday night saw us exit the Carabao Cup.

The first half saw an own goal by Ben White give the home side a one-goal lead, followed by a goal from Mohammed Kudus early in the second half for a 2-0 lead. Jarrod Bowen added a third with half an hour to go, and Martin Odegaard scored a late consolation goal.

In the ninth minute, Reiss Nelson’s free-kick was headed towards goal by Kai Havertz, but Lukasz Fabianski made a crucial save to tip the ball over the bar.

A stroke of bad luck

West Ham took the lead from a corner following a dangerous ball forward from Edson Alvarez, as White inadvertently headed the ball into our own net. There were claims of a foul on Aaron Ramsdale, but VAR was not available in the competition.

Fighting back

White had a chance to redeem himself with another headed effort from a Nelson free-kick, but Fabianski saved it for a corner. Eddie Nketiah’s subsequent header went wide.

An intense battle

At the other end, another Bowen corner caused chaos, but Ramsdale managed to push the ball away despite being pushed into the post. Nelson had a shot blocked for a corner, and Havertz headed wide from the resulting set-piece.

Just after the break, West Ham almost doubled their lead, but Ramsdale made a crucial save from a chance created by Lucas Paqueta. However, in the 50th minute, West Ham did score again through Kudus.

Jorginho and Zinchenko were substituted in the 57th minute as we searched for a way back into the match. However, Bowen’s strike with his right foot, with a deflection, found the back of the net for West Ham’s third goal.

Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka came on in the 66th minute for an attacking change, while Martin Odegaard replaced Nketiah with just over 10 minutes remaining. Kudus had a chance to extend West Ham’s lead, but his shot went wide.

In the dying moments of the game, Odegaard’s long-range strike was gathered by Fabianski. Odegaard then scored a consolation goal from a free-kick, bringing the final score to 3-1.

Next up

Our focus now turns to the Premier League, where we will face Newcastle United at St. James’ Park. The match kicks off at 5.30pm on Saturday, and a win could see us top the table.
