West Ham United: Álvarez nearing signing as Ward-Prowse agreement hits a snag

West Ham is optimistic about securing a deal for Ajax midfielder Edson Álvarez and is working on repairing the relationship between David Moyes and Tim Steidten, the club’s technical director, before the start of the season.

There is growing frustration at West Ham due to the lack of new signings. Since Steidten’s appointment last month, the club’s transfer activity has been sluggish, leading to uncertainty about Moyes’s future as the manager.

The tension between Steidten and Moyes stems from their differing opinions on transfer targets. West Ham is in need of two midfielders, a left-back, a left winger, and a centre-back following the departure of Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105m.

The disagreement over transfer targets has led Moyes to pursue proven Premier League players. His attempt to sign James Ward-Prowse from Southampton has hit a roadblock due to Steidten’s opposition to the transfer fee. West Ham is unwilling to go above £30m for Ward-Prowse and is exploring the possibility of including Flynn Downes as part of the deal. Moyes has been reluctant to pursue Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana, as suggested by Steidten.

As a result, the focus has shifted to Álvarez. West Ham is hoping to make significant progress in their negotiations with Ajax over the weekend. Agent fees delayed the move for the Mexican midfielder last month, but talks are set to take place. Álvarez, who has experience playing in the Champions League, is eager for a new challenge after a failed move to Borussia Dortmund. The potential cost of signing him is around £40m.

Reports suggesting that Moyes may quit the club have been downplayed by insiders. Those within the club are keen for Moyes and Steidten to establish a productive working relationship, believing that the mood will improve once new players are brought in. However, if West Ham starts the season poorly, a managerial change is a distinct possibility.

Moyes, who solidified his position by winning the Europa Conference League last season, is keen for West Ham to make an improved bid for Ward-Prowse. Alternative midfield targets include Manchester United’s Scott McTominay and Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher. Atalanta currently leads Internazionale in the race to sign West Ham’s Italian striker, Gianluca Scamacca.
