West Bank Witnesses Israel’s Most Intensive Military Operation in Years

Israel launched its most intensive military operation in the occupied West Bank in almost 20 years, using drone strikes and deploying hundreds of troops into a militant stronghold. The crackdown occurred in the Jenin refugee camp, known as a bastion for militants. The fighting lasted throughout the day, with smoke rising from the streets and the sound of gunfire and explosions. At least eight Palestinians were killed and dozens wounded.

The operation comes in response to recent attacks on Israeli settlers, including a shooting that killed four Israelis last month. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the operation aims to put an end to terrorism in Jenin.

The incursion was condemned by Palestinians and three Arab countries with normalized ties with Israel, as well as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. In response, the Palestinian leadership halted its limited contacts with Israel and vowed to step up activity against Israel in international forums.

Israeli military spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari claimed that the operation targeted militant command centers and weapons supplies. He also accused militants of operating near a United Nations building and storing weapons in a mosque.

The UN and UNRWA expressed concern about the scale of the operation, particularly in a densely populated refugee camp. Humanitarian aid is being mobilized to assist camp residents who are in need of food, water, and basic supplies.

The violence in the West Bank has been escalating due to various factors, including Israeli settlements and increased violence by Jewish settlers. Palestinians argue that the violence is a response to the occupation and lack of progress in the peace process.

Israeli military experts expect the operation to conclude within a day or two to avoid further casualties and international criticism. Prolonged violence could attract militant groups from Gaza and Lebanon into the fighting.

Overall, the situation remains tense as both sides continue to grapple with the ongoing violence and seek a resolution to the conflict.
