Week 1 Riser and Faller Highlights: Uncover the Key Points

Reassessing Preseason Rankings: Fantasy Basketball Risers and Fallers

This past week has been a whirlwind of excitement in the world of fantasy basketball. We’ve witnessed blockbuster trades, notable injuries, upsets, buzzer-beaters, and standout performances from superstars like LeBron James. With all these developments, it’s time for me to revisit my preseason rankings and take a closer look at which players are trending up or down in the fantasy basketball world. In this article, I’ll be expanding on my rookie report and highlighting some players who could be worth buying or selling based on their situation or recent performance. Let’s dive right into the points!

Note: It’s worth mentioning that we only have a week and some change worth of data, which is a minimal sample size!

The Risers:

Cam Thomas – SG, Brooklyn Nets

Preseason rank: 224 | ROS rank: 123 | Difference: +101

Thomas was initially overlooked in my preseason rankings due to his performance last season. However, he seems to have turned things around and is even showing improvement on the defensive end. With the Nets experiencing multiple injuries, Thomas has emerged as one of the few shot creators left on the team. His high number of shot attempts per game is an indicator of his increased usage. However, it’s important to note that once Cam Johnson returns, Thomas’ usage may decrease. It’s advisable to ride the wave but sell high before his performance declines.

Ben Simmons – PG/SG/PF, Brooklyn Nets

Preseason rank: 139 | ROS rank: 87 | Difference: +52

Simmons has been impressing everyone with his recent performances, reminding us of his former All-Star status. Like Cam Thomas, Simmons has been tasked with handling additional responsibilities due to injuries, and he’s taking full advantage. While rebounding numbers may decrease once Nic Claxton returns, Simmons is expected to maintain impressive combined averages in rebounds and assists. He’s a steal in fantasy formats, but it’s important to stay cautious as this situation can quickly change. Selling high might be a wise move, but holding onto him based on his current performance is understandable.

Dennis Schroder – PG/SG, Toronto Raptors

Preseason rank: 136 | ROS rank: 92 | Difference: +43

Schroder has surprised many with his exceptional performances this season. While his preseason rank may have been perceived as generous, he has stepped up his game, averaging 9.2 assists and boasting an impressive assist-to-turnover ratio. However, it’s quite unlikely that Schroder can maintain this level of performance, especially considering his career shooting percentage. Selling high would be a wise move as regression is bound to happen.

Tyrese Maxey – PG/SG, Philadelphia 76ers

Preseason Draft Ranking: 58 | Current Rank: 26 | Difference: +32

Maxey has quickly become a dominant force in the Philadelphia 76ers’ offense. With increased minutes this season, Maxey has proven himself to be one of the best guards in fantasy basketball. His usage rate, pass rate, and potential assists are all trending towards career highs. Additionally, Maxey’s increased effort in rebounding and drawing fouls has helped boost his overall impact on the game. Trading for Maxey might be challenging due to his skyrocketing stock price.

Jalen Duren – C, Detroit Pistons

Preseason Rank: 81 | Current Rank: 62 | Difference: +19

Despite dealing with an ankle injury, Duren has been putting up impressive numbers for fantasy managers. With minimal competition for minutes at the center position, Duren is logging significant playing time. Additionally, his shot chart reflects his dominance in the paint. His elite rebounding and defensive skills make him an asset in all formats, especially in points leagues. While some may consider selling high, holding on to Duren might be a wise choice due to his exceptional performance.

Chet Holmgren – PF/C, Oklahoma City Thunder

Preseason rank: 51 | ROS rank: 35 | Difference: +16

Holmgren has met and even exceeded fantasy managers’ expectations this season. He’s been a reliable option in both points and category leagues, showcasing impressive shot-blocking abilities. Additionally, his three-point shooting has been an unexpected bonus. Fantasy managers should take note that Holmgren currently outperforms Victor Wembanyama. Consider holding on to him as his value continues to rise.

The Fallers:

Scoot Henderson – PG, Portland Trail Blazers

Preseason rank: 108 | ROS rank: 160 | Difference: -52

Henderson’s playing time hasn’t been an issue, but his production has been lackluster. Furthermore, an ankle injury has further complicated matters. Improvements can be expected in the future, but unless he starts taking higher-percentage shots, his efficiency will remain a concern. Dropping him in any format, especially without the availability of an IL spot, might be a smart move.

Norman Powell – SG/SF, Los Angeles Clippers

Preseason rank: 133 | ROS rank: 175 | Difference: -42

Powell’s role as the primary option off the bench for the Clippers is coming to an end with the introduction of Russell Westbrook and James Harden. With fewer opportunities to create, Powell’s production is expected to decline. Fantasy managers should be cautious about rostering him, as he may not be a must-have player. Consider trading him if possible.

Deandre Ayton – C, Portland Trail Blazers

Preseason rank: 46 | ROS rank: 63 | Difference: -17

Ayton’s offensive performance has been disappointing thus far. As the second option on offense, his low scoring numbers (10 points per game) and lack of volume in shot attempts and free-throws are concerning. However, Ayton’s rebounding and defensive abilities remain strong. It might be wise to consider buying low on Ayton, as his usage is likely to increase as he becomes more acclimated to his new team.

Khris Middleton – SF/PF, Milwaukee Bucks

Preseason rank: 88 | ROS rank: 97 | Difference: -9

As predicted, Middleton’s performance has been inconsistent this season. With limited minutes due to an injury management plan, it’s advisable to bench him until further notice. Additionally, trading him after a good game might be a smart move. Keep a close eye on his situation before making any decisions.
