Sept. 1 (UPI) — Wildlife officials in Nova Scotia are currently investigating the presence of an African serval cat found roaming the streets of Halifax. This unusual discovery has raised concerns about the origins of the exotic feline.

Rachel Smith and her son were driving in the Armdale neighborhood when they witnessed a standoff between a domestic cat and a cat that appeared as large as a medium-sized dog. The existence of an exotic cat in Halifax was puzzling to Smith, who promptly reported the incident to local authorities, as mentioned in a CBC News article. The next day, the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources and Renewables confirmed the capture of the African serval by animal control officers along with the assistance of dedicated animal rescue volunteers.

While servals are illegal to own in Nova Scotia, they are sometimes kept as pets in other regions. Speculations suggest that the cat may have been illegally transported from Ontario into the province. Tricia Fleming, the human wildlife coexistence biologist with the Department of Natural Resources, stated that the serval is currently being observed to address any health concerns and determine an appropriate course of action moving forward.

Authorities are still investigating the cat’s origins to uncover the truth behind this unusual case. Meanwhile, Hope Swinimer, the owner of the Hope for Wildlife rehabilitation center in Seaforth, Nova Scotia, has generously offered to provide a permanent home for the serval. Swinimer explained in an interview with CTV News that having the serval at the center would serve as an educational tool to raise awareness about the negative consequences of keeping wildlife as pets.
