Walmart Shooter Settles with Families, Agrees to Pay Over $5 Million

A white gunman from Texas, who carried out a racist attack on Hispanic shoppers at a Walmart in 2019 and killed 23 people, has agreed to pay over $5 million in restitution to the victims’ families. Patrick Crusius, who pleaded guilty to federal hate crime charges, was sentenced to 90 consecutive life sentences in July. The amount, $5,557,005.55, has been approved by US District Judge David Guaderrama.

In an effort to ensure that victims receive restitution, including from high-profile inmates with large balances, the Justice Department proposed changes to how it manages federal prisoners’ deposit accounts in January. This move comes after the department faced criticism for the minimal payments made by inmates with substantial sums of money in their prison accounts. The El Paso Times highlights that Crusius, who had publicly funded attorneys in his federal and state cases, is unlikely to have assets or money close to the amount owed.

Patrick Crusius drove over 700 miles from his home near Dallas to specifically target Hispanics at the El Paso store, using an AK-style rifle. Just before beginning the attack, he posted a racist manifesto online, expressing concern about a Hispanic “invasion” of Texas. Although he pleaded guilty in February after the death penalty was taken off the table by federal prosecutors, Texas prosecutors are seeking to put him on death row in his state trial. The date for this trial has not been set yet.
