On Sunday, the environmentalist group Futuro Vegetal made an announcement detailing how its members had vandalized the $300 million superyacht belonging to Walmart heir Nancy Walton Laurie in Spain the previous day. This act of protest was in response to the demands of Extinction Rebellion Ibiza, which called for a ban on private jets and an end to luxury emissions.

“The only reason we continue to maintain an economic system that leads us to eco-social collapse is to sustain the privileges of this small, privileged class. The mega-rich live off the suffering of others,” proclaimed Futuro Vegetal in a statement translated from Spanish. They firmly believe that the people at the top of the social pyramid exploit animals, destroy the environment, and force others to work for their benefit, regardless of the consequences.

The protesters held signs with the message “You Consume Others Suffer” in front of the superyacht, which was covered in red paint as a symbol of global warming. Futuro Vegetal’s statement further emphasized the urgency of the climate crisis and their unwavering determination to mitigate its impact, stating, “Our lives are at stake.”

According to another statement from the group, two protesters named Marina and Bilbo were still in police custody but were expected to be released on Monday at noon after appearing in court. Meanwhile, Nancy Walton Laurie, the daughter of Walmart co-founder James “Bud” Walton, remains listed on the Bloomberg Billionaire Index with a net worth of $7.7 billion. Her superyacht, KAOS, measures 361 feet and weighs 4,523 tons, making it the largest yacht ever built in the Netherlands when launched in 2017.
