Dozens of dogs have tested positive for the virus, and unfortunately, four have already succumbed to it.
With the closure of the shelter, pet owners have nowhere to relinquish their animals or abandon stray dogs. However, local animal rescues have risen to the occasion.
Animal rescues play a vital role in bridging this gap. They are able to take in dogs from shelters and also accept pets surrendered by their owners.
Among the current occupants of one rescue are four of fifteen adorable puppies. Presently, animal rescues are operating at full capacity.
“It’s the most challenging situation I’ve ever witnessed,” expressed Kincaid, a representative from the rescue.
Kincaid further revealed that there has been a surge in pet owners surrendering their dogs and attempting to give them away.
“We’re also observing an influx of people offering free pets on social media platforms, like Claus,” shared Kincaid.
“We have to decline many requests, which is disheartening. However, it is solely based on our current foster capacity. With all our foster homes already occupied, we simply can’t accommodate more animals,” explained Matthews.
Rescues, such as Matthews’, often specialize in assisting dogs with medical or behavioral issues, which can make finding them new homes challenging.
According to Ashley Williams from the Wake County Animal Center, rescues offer the only chance for some dogs to leave the shelter alive.
“Nearly 30% of the dogs we place are transferred to our rescue partners,” Williams revealed. “That’s thousands of animals.”
With the shelter closed and rescues operating at full capacity, Matthews expressed her concern.
“This situation could lead to a significant increase in dog fatalities,” Matthews worried. “Especially with the harsh weather conditions, we might see more instances of people simply abandoning their dogs outside.”
Local rescues are urging for additional support from other rescues to save as many dogs as possible.
“It’s the only way we can make a difference amidst these challenging circumstances,” emphasized Kincaid.
