Vivek Ramaswamy firmly stands by his comparison between Ayanna Pressley and the KKK

During an Iowa campaign event, GOP presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy faced criticism from Dana Bash for comparing Rep. Ayanna Pressley to a “modern grand wizard of the modern KKK.” Bash fact-checked Ramaswamy on “State of the Union,” challenging him to defend his comments about Pressley, the first black woman to represent her state in Congress. She questioned how his views could be comparable to the horrific actions committed by the KKK. Ramaswamy attempted to rewrite his comments by claiming that KKK leaders would be “proud” of Pressley, but Bash reminded him that he was misquoting himself. Ramaswamy then linked Pressley’s words to the “spirit” of the white supremacist organization. He argued that it was wrong for Pressley to suggest that he couldn’t express his views based on his skin color, and he called for an open and honest discussion about race. While he eventually acknowledged that the KKK’s actions were wrong, he believed there is a gap between public and private discourse on the topic. Pressley’s team responded to Ramaswamy, stating that his comments were a “bad-faith attack” and harmful. They emphasized that speaking out against racial injustice should not be equated to being part of the KKK.
