MANILA, Philippines–In an impressive display, Stallion-Laguna and Kaya-Iloilo redeemed themselves after disappointing setbacks in their Asian Football Confederation (AFC) club campaigns. They secured convincing victories over UAAP teams to close out the group stage of the Copa Paulino Alcantara.

Stallion-Laguna’s Yuta Nomura scored a hat trick while Finn McDaniel netted two goals, leading their team to a resounding 9-1 victory against Adamson University. The match took place on Sunday at the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite. With this win, Stallion emerged as the top team in Group B.

Kaya-Iloilo’s Mar Diano, Jovin Bedic, and Jhan-Jhan Melliza also made significant contributions by scoring early goals within the first 13 minutes. Abou Sy added two goals in the second half, leading Kaya to a dominant 5-1 victory against Far Eastern University. The match took place the following day at Rizal Memorial Stadium, pitting the champions of the Philippines Football League against the champions of UAAP.

These impressive victories came barely a week after Kaya suffered a 3-1 defeat to China’s Shandong Taishan in the AFC Champions League, and Stallion faced a 5-2 loss against Indonesia’s Bali United in the AFC Cup.

Kaya and Stallion are scheduled to resume their continental stints next week. However, before that, they will face each other in the first leg of the quarterfinal phase on Friday at Rizal Memorial. Kaya will compete against University of the Philippines, the only UAAP team to reach the quarterfinals after finishing as one of the two best third placers. On the other hand, Stallion will face fellow PFL club Maharlika-Manila, which finished second in Group B.

The quarterfinal pairings on Saturday will feature Group B winner Dynamic Herb Cebu against Group C third-placer Mendiola FC 1991, and Group A runner-up CF Manila against Group C second-placer Davao Aguilas. These matches will showcase the talent and competition between teams outside of the PFL or UAAP.
