Maruti Suzuki Chairman criticizes state officials’ adherence to license raj, compares it to outdated times

The manufacturing sector in India is yet to experience significant growth despite reforms introduced by the central government, according to RC Bhargava, Chairman of Maruti Suzuki India. Speaking at an event, Bhargava highlighted that although the government has made various improvements to the business environment and the ease of doing business rankings have improved, the desired results have not been seen. He attributed this to the unchanged mindset and practices of state government officials, who continue to operate in a controlling manner rather than facilitating business. Bhargava emphasized that in order to achieve the desired growth rate of 12 percent per year, everyone involved in the industry must prioritize the growth of their companies over personal wealth. He also mentioned the need for the manufacturing sector to contribute at least 25 percent to the country’s GDP to solve major issues like poverty and unemployment. Bhargava noted that India remains a growing and highly competitive car market, with the potential for further growth. Maruti Suzuki plans to introduce electric cars and aims to launch six models in order to maintain market share. However, Bhargava believes that by 2030, only 15-20 percent of the company’s sales will be electric vehicles.
