Vargas and Campos team up to lead ValleyCats to victory over Boulders in series opener

On Friday night, Jhon Vargas made an impressive debut as the starting pitcher for the Tri-City ValleyCats. In addition, catcher Oscar Campos played his first home game in Troy after almost two years. The duo formed a formidable battery that effectively shut down the New York Boulders, who dominated Tri-City’s pitching last season.

Vargas displayed his skills by striking out 10 batters in six innings, while Campos contributed to the victory by driving in two runs. The ValleyCats defeated the Boulders with a score of 5-2, much to the delight of the crowd of 3,004 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium. Cito Culver also had an impressive performance, hitting two home runs for the ValleyCats. This win improved their record to 35-23. The ValleyCats had lost eight out of nine games against the Boulders last season, with the Boulders averaging 12.4 runs per game.

ValleyCats manager, Incaviglia, praised Vargas for his excellent performance, stating that he lived up to expectations since they acquired him through a trade. Due to the need for more starting pitchers, the ValleyCats had acquired Vargas from the Evansville Otters, giving up injured outfielder Josh Broughton in return. Vargas had previously pitched against the ValleyCats as a member of the Evansville Otters, and after the trade, he returned to Troy.

Vargas expressed his surprise at the trade but appreciated the warm welcome from his new teammates. Campos, on the other hand, made his third appearance as a player for the ValleyCats, having played for them in 2018 and 2021. After a brief stint with the Mets organization, Campos was released and re-signed with the ValleyCats. Alongside catching for Vargas, Campos also made significant contributions on the offensive side by hitting an RBI double and a sacrifice fly.

Incaviglia credited Campos’ return for the improvement in their pitching. Culver’s impressive multi-homer game also added to the team’s success. With this victory, the ValleyCats currently hold the third position in the East Division, one game behind the division leader, New Jersey, and one game ahead of the Boulders. The top three teams in the division will make it to the playoffs.

The ValleyCats are considering Coleman Huntley III and Blake Workman to share the closer role left vacant by Reymin Guduan, who recently left the team. Incaviglia, although serving a suspension, watched the game from his office instead of the dugout. The ValleyCats reached the limit for player ejections, which triggered an automatic suspension for the manager, as per Frontier League rules.

In summary, the Tri-City ValleyCats had a successful game against the New York Boulders, thanks to the strong performance of Jhon Vargas and Oscar Campos. Their contributions on the mound and at bat led the team to a 5-2 victory, positioning them well in the division standings.
