US Teen Allegedly Pushed to Suicide by Extradited Nigerian

In March 2022, a tragic situation unfolded when 17-year-old Jordan DeMay from Michigan received a disturbing message on Instagram. The unknown individual threatened to expose DeMay’s nude photo to the public unless he paid $1,000. Despite his efforts, DeMay could only gather $300. Feeling helpless, he expressed his despair by saying “I’m kms rn [killing myself right now]. Bc [because] of you.” Shockingly, the reply he received was heartless, saying, “Good. Do that fast. Or I’ll make you do it.” Sadly, DeMay took his own life shortly after, resorting to self-inflicted gunshot wound. This chilling incident has led to a four-count indictment, with the US government highlighting a Nigerian man as the primary suspect. The unique aspect of this case lies in the extradition of the suspect to the US, where he could possibly face a life sentence for sexual exploitation and attempted sexual exploitation of a minor resulting in death.

According to prosecutors, Samuel Ogoshi, a 22-year-old man from Lagos, hacked into an account and impersonated a young woman to convince DeMay to share a sexually explicit photo. However, DeMay was just one of many victims caught in this elaborate sexual extortion scheme. The scheme involved extensive research into victims’ personal lives, including their relationships, schools, workplaces, and behaviors. Prosecutors allege that Ogoshi collaborated with his younger brother, 20-year-old Samson Ogoshi, and another individual named Ezekiel Ejehem Robert, as part of their plan to extort over 100 people between February 2021 and May 2022. The FBI had previously issued a warning about these “sextortion” schemes that primarily originate overseas, revealing that thousands of teenagers have fallen victim to them. Tragically, there have been over a dozen reported suicides related to such schemes, painting a grim picture of the consequences.

The younger Ogoshi, charged along with his brother for conspiracy to sexually exploit minors, distribute child pornography, and commit stalking through the internet, was also extradited from Nigeria. FBI agents had conducted a cooperative investigation in Nigeria, leading to a judge ordering the brothers’ extradition. The final surrender order was signed by the Nigerian solicitor-general on August 3. DeMay’s mother expressed hope that this case sets an example for online criminals, stating, “I hope it sets an example that the people who are engaging in this type of activity online… can be caught.” Robert, who was indicted by a federal grand jury in Michigan, is awaiting extradition.
